"In
our environment, we rely on our infrastructure and heavily
as we do our internal systems. Applied Software has been with
us from day one. They know our systems inside out. But most
importantly, when a member of their technical team does a
project in our office, I know when they've left that its been
done properly."

| Company Profile |
Cain Hibbard Myers & Cook, PC, which
has a lineage extending back to the mid-1800s, is one of the
most diversified law firms in Western Massachusetts. Based
in Pittsfield and Great Barrington, the practice covers all
of Berkshire County and reaches into the neighboring areas
of southern Vermont, eastern New York and northern Connecticut.
Cain Hibbard is an example of a firm that used technology
to extend its reach in the marketplace. It has attorneys who
work out of multiple states for clients from all over the
world. |
| |
|
| Challenge |
Cain Hibbard's goal is to have every
single document or item within a particular case available
at the desktop - essentially a virtual file cabinet available
at any time and from any location. With attorneys and clients
geographically disbursed as widely as they are, this is no
small challenge. The design and reliability of Cain Hibbard's
IT infrastructure is a critical factor. Meanwhile, as much
as there is agreement within the Firm to eliminate paper,
there is resistance forego hard copy versions of critical
documents. |
| |
|
| Solution |
Document Management has long been the
cornerstone of internal systems technology for the law firm.
Cain Hibbard is no exception. Nearly eight years ago, Applied
Software implemented PC Docs, a Document Management solution.
Since then, the firm has upgraded to Hummingbird's Docs Open.
Cain Hibbard insists however that while Docs Open is a great
fit for their Firm, customization has been a critical factor
in true automation - which has both aligned Cain Hibbard's
systems to its processes and saved the Firm time. For example,
Applied Software developed a program to regularly pull Locator
numbers from its Time and Billing system into its DOCS Open,
which keeps both programs in sync with each other. |

Infrastructure technology
serves as a business enabler for Cain Hibbard. The firm
relies on its multi-site infrastructure, including remote
and wireless access to conduct business far outside
its geographic locals. Without stable and high speed
connectivity, this type of business would be difficult,
if not economically infeasible.

Through customization to DOCS Open,
Cain Hibbard has created a document management system
in line with the Firms documentation procedures and
practices. As they upgrade and continue refining their
system, they hope to further eliminate paper. |

Applied Software's customization also save the Firm
time and errors- full integration between Time and Billing
and Document Management has eliminated a person needing
to manually transfer information program to another. |
