With wireless technology extended to its cocktailing services through the use of hand-held point-of-sale devices, the Red Lion Inn showcases how mobile technology is improving operational efficiencies -

Applied Software Technologies, a leading provider of collaborative and mobile solutions announced today its implementation of WiFi high speed Internet access at the historic Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Red Lion Inn, a full service hotel, is one of the few remaining American Inns in continuous use since the 18th century.

“The Red Lion Inn has a long tradition of welcoming its guests with traditional country elegance and hospitality,” said David Durfee, Director of Marketing at the Red Lion Inn. “At the same time, we want to offer our guests the same modern conveniences they would expect at any first-class hotel. Wireless Internet service is an increasingly important component of this approach.”

In addition to high speed Internet access throughout the Inn, wireless technology was extended to the Inn’s point-of-sale system. Using hand-held devices, wait staff are now able to take and enter orders from the Inn’s open porch and lawn, without traversing back inside through the lobby and dining room simply to place an order. The devices helps wait staff serve their customers more quickly and effectively, while reducing traffic flow through public spaces.

“The Red Lion is a distinctive property that has really set a standard for gracious hospitality in the Berkshires,” said Edward Garibian, President of Applied Software Technologies. “Their decision to move to wireless Internet for their guests will help them continue to attract the ever important and discerning business traveler. In addition, by mobile-enabling and their point-of-sale and business systems, they have opened up whole arena of opportunities to improve operational efficiencies. To see that kind of return is a very exciting story for any business,” Garibian added.

Cisco Systems’ Airespace co-branded products were chosen for their reliability, scalability, and multiple pathway structure to accommodate the multi-functionality of the infrastructure. The Cisco infrastructure will help insure that guests receive reliable and high speed service - and at the same time insure the security of the Inn’s business information.

In the future, the Inn plans to incorporate wireless technology into its food and beverage inventory process by using hand held devices to scan inventory information from its multiple storage areas throughout the facility.
